Consultancy

I have worked on a number of consultancy-type projects, working mostly for government bodies but also for the private sector. My role on these projects has varied, but I typically work with one of the large commercial social research organisations within the context of various aspects of my academic expertise.

Heat Network Investment Programme pilot
In 2017, I worked extensively on the evaluation of the Heat Network Investment Programme pilot application process, which also involved capturing a snapshot of the heat networks industry. On this project, I led on: the implementation and analysis of almost sixty in-depth interviews (with applicants to the HNIP pilot and stakeholders in the heat network industry) and the preparation of the final report. The evaluation was for the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and was implemented by a consortium led by Risk Solutions (and also including Policy Studies Institute, Tavistock Institute of Human Relations and London Economics).

Public dialogue on quantum technology
On this project, I provided expert advice on setting up, implementing and analysing a stakeholder workshop that was designed to inform a series of public dialogues on quantum technology. I worked on this with Kantar, and the work was funded by EPSRC.

Factors affecting public engagement by researchers
The Factors Affecting project examined the attitudes and experiences of academic researchers with respect to public engagement. My main tasks were to: write an extensive literature review (which also offered a history of public engagement); advise on the implementation and analysis of a large scale survey and some in-depth interviews; write an executive summary for the main report; and contribute at consortium meetings and the report launch. The project was funded in 2015 by a consortium of UK research funders, led by Wellcome Trust, and the project itself was led by Kantar. As a follow-up project, I wrote a journal article and presented a paper at PCST 2016 in Istanbul (co-authored with Chloe Sheppard at Wellcome Trust and Jenni Chambers at RCUK). See more here.

British Gas Smart Energy Report
This 2014 project consisted of an evaluation of the British Gas online and app-based energy consumption feedback and energy saving advice system, Smart Energy Report. The reporting also involved making recommendations for future development. The work was funded by British Gas, and I worked with Ruth Rettie and Tim Harries.

Evaluation of the Low Carbon Community Challenge
This 2010-11 project was funded by Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and led by GfK-NOP. My role was to provide expert advice on the full range of evaluation tools that GfK-NOP used to evaluate a set of LCCC-funded projects.
